What is Physiotherapy?

Physical Therapy (Physiotherapy or PT) is a multi-faceted modality incorporating hands-on treatment, as well as practical education to promote wellness.  The goals of PT are to resolve pain, improve mobility and restore strength to areas where there is some deficit.  The clinician performs a thorough evaluation and listens to the patient's chief complaint in order to get at the source of the problem, or restore function after injury or surgery.  Thus, it is a team effort, in which both patient and clinician work together.  Interventions may include mobilization to joints and muscle, postural education, assisted stretching and relaxation techniques, neuromuscular therapy and special exercise prescriptions.  Finally, PT is an excellent complement to chiropractic or myotherapy, and should provide the most long-term benefits when integrated.
